Recovery from the aftermath of the Second World War was steady and slow – a time for austerity, rationing, housing shortages and conservative attitudes. The emergence of a more prosperous society saw enormous growth in consumer goods and the rise of youth culture linked to styles of music and dress most notably the Teddy Boys with their rockabilly hairstyles and brothel creeper shoes. Fun was in the air.
